Folsom Library, RPI Troy New York

Quinlivan, Pierik and Krause designed the brutalist Richard G. Folsom Library for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. It was completed in 1976.

After the old library was destroyed in a fire, the college built this controversial $7 million library in the Modernist style of the day. It is perched on the hillside above Troy. A plaza and underground annex connects it to the nearby St. Joseph’s Chapel, and construction errors cause a bowing in the floors. Students say the library is sliding into Troy due to the error.
