Whale Apartments, Amsterdam

The Whale apartment building by young architect Frits van Dongen is in the rejuvinated Oostelijk Havengebied (Eastern Docklands) of Amsterdam, close to Borneo bridge. It was completed in 2000.

The building fits oddly into the rigid, confined site. Windows take on a checkered pattern with smaller zinc tiles, but the line of the aluminum rises and falls unexpectedly, and breaks up the boringness. More light enters into the central garden.

Light penetrates through the first floor which is set back. Intersections break the grid and establish esidential, semi-public, and public zones.
