Vatican Museums, Viale Vatican Rome

The Musei Vaticani opened in 1506 and soon received its current facilities designed by Luca Beltrami. LHoused here are works by such famous aritsts as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Caravaggio. Most famously, it has the Sistine Chapel originally designed by Giovanni de’ Dolci.

The 1,400 room palace itself takes drastic form according to its program. The staircase, for example, circles as it flows from the skylight to the fountain below. As the museums were seen as an object of civic pride, the city culture pervaded the spaces and established a basis for viewing the art.
