The New Art Gallery, Walsall England

The Walsall Art Gallery designed by Caruso St John Architects opened in 2000. The terracotta sheathing invites an intimacy with its small-town urban scale. The tallest part of the building cantelivers over the only free-glazed section which connects to the outside.

Inside, exposed concrete members, Douglas fir finish, and some metal parts opens the visitor to an experience beyond the environment they entered through. The gallery has become an integral part of Walsall’s downtown, and an important link to the nearby canal.
