Sonnenschiff, Freiburg

Rolf Disch designed the Sonnenschiff mixed-used development park in Frieburg, completed in 2004. Commercial space is stacked below, office space, and 52 middle-end and high-end residences. Up to 1,000m2 of solar panels crown the top of the colorful buildings. Rooftop gardens include rainwater collection systems that recycle the grey water for use.

The floor to ceiling windows appear wasteful to me, but apparently the 3-pane glass retains energy in the building. They take more energy to make and they are expensive, but at least the end product is energy efficient, right? And parking is scarce.

The complex reportedly captures 4 times the energy it consumes. Also shown is Disch’s Heliotrope building, which was the first building ever to produce more energy than it consumes, reportedly.
