Schloss Schwerin, Germany

The Schwerin Palace was completed in 1857, designed by Georg Adolf Demmler with contributions by Friedrich August Stüler, Gottfried Semper, and Ernst Friedrich Zwirner. Gottfried Semper is known for his strong democratic ideals and the Dresden Opera House. But his ideas were largely ignored as Grand Duke Friedrich instead found inspiration from French Renaissance castles of old. Today the buiding houses the region’s State Assembly.

A bridge links the island to the main city, while long formal gardens proceed down the other side. There are some traditional elements, and 20th century ornamentation in the garden structures. Much of these areas were rebuilt after a fire in 1913. But the building is overall a lavish French design of stone. Wikipedia labels it “an example of pompous historicism in architecture.”
