Royal Gorge Bridge, Canon City Colorado

George F. Cole designed the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado, constructed in 1929. It was the highest bridge in the world for 72 years, at 955ft high and 1,260 ft long.

Lon P. Piper financed the bridge not for transportation, but as a local tourist venue to see the gorge. Long bundles of cables connect via hefty metal towers. Wooden planks provide a walking surface that can even be driven on.
