Rafael Viñoly’s Battersea Power Station Scheme

Since it’s creation in 1939, the Battersea Powerstation in London has been an icon of brick structures and of power generation. It is no wonder then that many top architects have been interested recently in making the station “sustainable.” Vinoly has proposed a 250,000m2 ecodome for the surrounding site, with a 300m tall chimney. The original brick structure, the largest brick structure in Europe, would accomodate restaurants, shopping, museums, and hotels. To reinvigorate the area, flats and a new Tube station would be built nearby. The £4 billion scheme has been called “a major menace to London” by former RIBA president George Ferguson, which prompted Vinoly to claim that these are “very preliminary ideas” and that he’s open to “public discussion.”
