Osaka Maritime Museum, Osaka Japan

Paul Andreu, Tohata Architects, and Arup designed the Osaka Maritime Museum along the sea-route of the city to celebrate its history of ocean transportation. Similar to Chicago’s Adler Planetarium, the shining dome serves as a coastal landmark, like a kind of lighthouse.

The visitor enters the dome through a colorful undersea hallway, as the dome is isolated in the ocean to clearly establish the impression that it is floating on the water. Each floor of the 35m tall dome explains a different period in history, focusing on how the history influenced today’s culture. The museum opened in 2000.

The dome skin is a different structural system than the internal four floors, because of the high seismic and wave forces.
