NEMO National Center for Science and Technology, Amsterdam

Not one to be subtle with mimicry, Renzo Piano engages the site context at Amerstams docks with a monumental copper ship. NEMO, which opened in 1997, provides workshops for the National Center for Science and Technology, a science museum of sorts for kids.

A beautifully curved bridge approaches the building. The building curves also match the IJ tunnel below. The final destination, the rooftop, is terraced to provide viewing decks in this rather low-laying city. The interior is rather toned down, as not to compete with the displays and workshops.
