National Wine Centre of Australia, Adelaide

Why not design an exploded wine barrel as a wine center? It may seem amateurish, but wine barrels are main the structure of wine-making aren’t they? Grieve Gillette and Cox Architects starts the Wine Australia experience at the grape-vine as one approaches, to the wine barrel, and through each exhibit about the technology and process of wine-making.

The curve of the fragmented barrel determine circulation. An enormous rammed earth wall makes up the spine of the building. Offices, a restaurant, and tasting facilities add to the exhibits. Transparencies, views, program relationships, and privacy concerns further contort the form of the building.
