La Fosse Dionne, Tonnerre

The Romans built built a stone structure around this ancient Celtic spring in medieval times. The amount of water produced by the spring varies, but it is often a significant torrent of water that splashes around the stone ring and down through a channel in the city.

A roofed semicircular building surrounds the stone rings, and has recessed fireplaces in the walls to provide comfort in the winter time. The water’s exit from the stone circle references ancient ritual bathing designs. The pool itself is deep, clear, and has stunning underwater plant-life. It makes for a magical atmosphere, a jewel in the midst of an old town.
