Jewish Center Synagogue, Munich

Wandel Hoefer Lorch + Hirsch designed the Jewish Center in München, Germany, completed in 2007. The stone-clad base recalls the ancient Hebrew temple of Solomon. It is thick, protective, and permanent. It protects a rectangular structure of metal mesh and glass. This modern element recalls the softness and impermanence of a migratory tent.

It is an interesting comparison of permanence and impermanence, solid and transparency, private and public. This iconic structure sits in on the side of a public square and within a complex of interconnected and public spaces. The interior is highly geometric and inviting of sunlight.
