Henderson Waves Bridge, South Ridges Singapore

IJP Corp and RSP Architects Planners and Engineers designed the pedestrian bridge linking Mount Faber Park and Telok Blangah Hill Park above Henderson Road. At 274m long and 36m tall, it is the tallest pedestrian bridge in Singapore.

The bridge won the 2009 president’s design award for its iconic parametric shape. Seven curved steel ribs undulate over and under the walkway, providing opportunities for shelter and open views. The repeated trusses take on an organic form, while steel railings and wooden yellow balau planks provide a warm contrast of texture.

The concrete pilasters are awkwardly integrated, and it is obvious that they were not considered in the conceptual design. Also, metal mesh railings were introduced out of necessity in awkward tight spots on the walkway. The engineer should have paid closer attention to this detail necessity.

South Ridges is a 9 km stretch of land along the various parks of southern Singapore. The country began a $25.5m program in 2002 to link them with 8 trails and 3 bridges.
