Arnhem Central Station, Netherlands

UNStudio designed the Arhem Centraal railway station in Arnhem, Netherlands, completed in 2015. This expansion focuses on large overhead lighting and wide structural members. This gives a sense of lightness and connection in the midst of a very busy transportation hub.

The repetitive white cladding on the parallel platforms speak to the white high-speed trains that run between Arhem and Germany. The stairway decent to the platforms themselves takes the form of the train front. The station itself is vast and metallic. Curving forms of metal rise from the ground and twist around to provide shelter, natural light openings, and direction for circulation. The architecture is iconic and indicative of the movement and escalation that comes with riding a train.
