Rather than demolish four enormous old gas tanks, architects Jean Nouvel, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Manfred Wedhorn, Wilhelm Holzbauer undertook a revitalization project to insert residential, commercial, office, a music hall, movie theater, student dormitory, and municipal archive into the 90,000 m³ structures. Each architect treated the circular tanks differently, with different separations of old and new, and different arrangements of interior courtyards. Coop Himmelblau simply threw a modern steel/glass structure against the original brick, adding more reverence to the preservation of the historic structure.
The architects endeavored to design eco-friendly, as well as manipulating sensibilities with translucent roofs and vast technicolor windows. |
