State Street Village, IIT Chicago Illinois

Helmut Jahn designed the State Street Village (SSV) for the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2003. Already beloved in Chicago, Helmut Jahn took some of the role of a modern Mies van der Rohe. Close to Crown Hall and just across the street from the Student Activities Building these new dormitories. The curved front soaks up the rare sun while the back protects against the shaking and sounds of the elevated train. Open atriums are punched out intermittently. Slick metal siding and a variety of screens and glazing establish entrances, gathering spaces, and private spaces.

While the practical engineering of these expensive living spaces has been criticized, this arrangement and construction, including how it interacts with the new and historic buildings around it, has drawn praise all around.
