Museum Modern Art Museumquartier, Vienna Austria

The Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (MUMOK) is located at Vienna’s Museumsquartier. Mueseumsquartier is one of the largest cultural centers in the world, with historic and modern museums comprising 60,000 m2. This 2001 design by Ortner & Ortner was hotly contested and lost an iconic tower as a compromise for the historic heritage of the site.

Slits of windows peep through, suggesting something inside like the earth below the plaza. The curved roofline bows the edifice down towards the ground, making it a piece of the landscape rather than a block ontop of it.
