New England Aquarium, Boston Massachusetts

The New England Aquarium was designed by Cambridge Seven Associates in 1969 with a recent IMAX addition by E. Verner Johnson and Associates and a new wing designed by Schwartz/Silver Architects in 1989. With a new deconstructivist style and an emphasis on a natural setting, this aquarium changed the design of natural exhibits.

A “Giant Ocean Tank” with 200,000 gallons simulates a Caribbean coral reef, and other smaller tanks can be viewed from underwater glass. Outside, the interplay of fragmented glazing and exterior materials creates a dynamic atmosphere that is yet strangely static, as it consists of straight lines rather than flowing curves.

Located appropriatly on the Massachusetts waterfront, this building has become a beloved part of the city skyline and a connection to the natural world.
