Dirty House, London England

David Adjaye, who designed the Nobel Peace Centre, converted a furniture factory into this home for artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster. He had just completed a home for artist Chris Ofill. Located in a rough East London neighborhood, this building includes a grimy character with bare walls, boarded groundfloor windows, and black graffiti-resistant paint over the original brick.

The three stories were stripped down and double-height studio space was punched out. Security was added with mirrored windows. Other than that, the interior is quite ornate. The white flat roof floats above the rest with exterior walls of glazing, suggesting an existential goodness.
