Nagasaki Prefectural Museum, Nagasaki Japan

Kengo Kuma and Associates designed the Nagasaki Prefectural Museum in 2005. A canal bisects the museum, perhaps taking a cue from the Nagasaki Peace Museum. Vertical structure of handrails on pedestrian bridges reflect the bamboo forest facades that define important elements.

The canal becomes an important promenade for residents. A glass bridge connects the two buildings overhead. Heavy stone exteriors on the street side contrast the light louvred glass on the in-facing side. As the only port open to the world for much of Japan’s history, Nagasaki has a rich latticework precedent taken from colonial visitors.
