NYU Department of Philosophy, New York

Steven Holl Architects designed this 2007 interior for the New York University’s Department of Philosophy. Originally built in 1890, the historic building is clad with red sandstone and has plenty of large windows afford good opportunities for a naturally bright interior.

In typical Holl style, the renovation takes on a “backbone of light.” Pores of light join a grand skylight in celebrating the 6-story staircase. Colored reflection and nets of rainbow prisms bring a character to this light that allows the white light to act as a sort of shadow.

The seminars and offices take on different characters of black and white, and a curvilinear ceiling brings a unique space to the auditorium. Light renders a space that supports teaching, and suggests philosophy in and of itself.
