Opera House, Holmen Island Copenhagen Denmark

The new Copenhagen Opera House on Holmen Island in Denmark is one of the most expensive opera houses ever built, at $500 million. It was designed by Henning Larsen Architects, who also did Der Spiegel Headquarters in Hamburg in cooperation with Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller.

The house comes alive at night as a glimmering jewel that can be seen across the shoreline. It takes its place in the Dokøen harbor, with a steel plank bridge to the left and a landscaped plaza to the right. It is positioned opposite the Amalienborg and aligned with the neighboring Marble Church. New canals makes the island seem smaller, just barely larger than the opera house.

The expensive arrangement of staging affords easy movement of setups. A large musician pit fills the 1700 seats with good sound. Rich imported materials, such as Sicilian Perlatino marble floors and gold leaf ceilings combine with rich new technology, such as LED lighting in the balconies, to create a truly opulent space.
