Brunswick Centre, London England

This 1972 project combined residential and commercial. It has 560 residences, shops, cafés, restaurants, a supermarket, and a cinema. This private development was designed by Patrick Hodgkinson, but never fully completed for lack of funds. The exterior is still unpainted. The Bunswick is a barbaric modernist structure that easily looks run-down and dangerous.

In 2006 it received a £22 million renovation and now looks a little less run-down. The addition of water features and colored lighting for night time helps to add human life in the built landscape. There are historical elements in this project that just can’t be replaced, such as the cruise-liner chimneys. The sun-room glass that extends out of concrete structure has oft been repeated in housing developments. This has earned this complex the status of iconic.
