Queen Margaret University, Musselburgh Scotland

Opened on July 4, 2008, the new Queen Margaret University near Edinburgh in Scotland was designed by Dyer Architects. They designed the structures on the 35 acre site for sustainability and a welcome atmosphere. Wetlands and natural landscaping come right up to the post-modernists buildings, as a bridge crosses a water feature for access to the Learning Resource Centre.

The long and narrow structure has an atrium in the middle with the same kind of columned boxes jutting into it which jut out into the exterior site. The arrangement promotes human connectivity as well as natural ventilation and daylighting. The atrium separates teaching and administration functions. The biomass heating system helps cut the campus’ energy consumption and carbon emission by 75%.
