Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles California

Fresh off his success at Bilbao, Frank Gehry designed the spectacular Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles, California. Featured in many films, this building has become an international icon of L.A. and of modern architectural prowess since its 2003 completion.

As Frank Gehry explains, the building becomes a “living thing” as sculpted form interacts with light and the environmental context. The contextual language of buildings and sailing are deconstructed, as the functions of spaces are met.

The acoustics are superb for all fine arts performance types; the building is the home Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. The Oak panel interior sharpens the sound while providing a soft interior the contrasts the metal exterior. The concave reflective stainless steel cladding had to be sanded down in places because people were getting radiation burns while walking down the sidewalk.
