Centre Pompidou-Metz, France

The Pompidou Center in Paris is opening a new museum in Metz, east of Paris. The winning Shigeru Ban, Tokyo & Jean de Gastine and Philip Gumuchdjian design seeks to decentralize culture by injecting international art in an obscure town. It will offer cinema and performance space as well as gallery.

Shigeru Ban is known for their paper temporary studio at the top of Paris’ Pompidou museum. The noticable exterior bamboo netting in this design speaks of a threshold for the gallery which flows and contorts as a guide for the rectangular tubes below. A central spire speaks of a self-assuming international icon.
